In-Place Inclinometer

The INC500 is our latest in-place inclinometer model replacing the INC320. The INC500 includes a network of the latest MEMS technology sensors and improved signal conditioning and data acquisition electronics within a flexible plastic, low-profile, watertight housing. A new centralizer attached to the outside of the INC500 housing allows for installation in standard 2.75-inch diameter inclinometer casing. This new centralizer has four stainless steel wheel assemblies providing stabilized positioning in all directions. The INC500 also features a new coupler providing improved assembly of adjacent inclinometer modules.
The INC500 system integrates an entire network of digital tilt measurements over a single cable connected to a GCM controller. Complete results are communicated from the GCM to a server computer via wireless internet modems. The INC500 offers many distinct features that make it an attractive alternative or replacement for traditional borehole inclinometer type systems.
The INC500 greatly simplifies field installation, reduces field data collection costs, and provides continuous web-based monitoring. Complete inclinometer results can be viewed from any web browser with a connection to the internet. Geodaq has over 10 years of experience with MEMS sensor technology and web-based data acquisition starting with our remote vibration monitoring device.

Sample System
The illustration to the below shows how five modules (model INC310) can be assembled to provide a 40-foot long in-place inclinometer system. Tilt measurements are collected simultaneously at multiple depths resulting in a profile of slope change over depth. Finally, a displacement profile is calculated by integrating the tilt profile information.

Readings are collected by our controller module and transmitted via an internet modem for unattended remote operation. Alternatively, a laptop computer or other data logger equipment can be used to interface with the controller unit using simple RS-232 protocol commands.
Performance
The INC300 series in-place inclinometer consists of a series of self-contained instrumentation modules.
Each module contains a series of precisely spaced sensors capable of measuring acceleration, tilt, and temperature based on user
selectable operation modes.
Tilt readings at known locations along the length of the INC can be evaluated using numerical integration techniques to produce displacement profiles like the results shown on the figure to the right.
Field Installation
INC300 Series inclinometer modules installed in a borehole using a bentonite cement grout mix. Modules are joined together quickly using snap-on couplers, and additional support can be acheived using duct tape or adhesive lined heat shrink tube. The square shape of the inclinometer housing provides a simple and reliable way to achieve correct tilt sensor alignment during installation. Alignment tabs and mating slots ensure that all modules are oriented in the same direction.
Step 4) Snap on plastic coupler (INC150) making sure alignment tabs mate with the slots on the coupler. Further secure coupler to inclinometer modules by taping with duct tape or applying an adhesive lined heat shrink tube over both inclinometer modules and the cable connection area.
Step 5) If installing in a borehole, lower modules into fluid filled borehole and repeat steps 1 through 4 for each additional module. Additional torsional rigidity for deeper borhole installations can be achieved by attaching modules to a PVC pipe or inclinometer tube using duct tape or plastic ties. If embedding in a structural element such as a pile, pier, or wall, attach assembly to a structural element and insert.
Model Description
The INC310, INC320, and INC330 inclinometer models provide different levels of accuracy by inclusion of 4, 8, and 16 internal tilt sensors (MEMS accelerometers), respectively. The INC models are manufactured with bi-axial tilt sensors mounted in a horizontal or vertical orientation. INC300 modules cost as low as $815 (Qty 10) depending on the total number ordered.
